Education

Dr. Karen Hindhede is set to receive her Ph.D. in Sustainability Education from Prescott College in May 2024. Her dissertation, Growing an Ecojustice Pedagogy and Ethic in Children’s Literature: Implications for Transdisciplinary Praxis, reflects her commitment to sustainable education. She holds an M.A. in English from the University of Nebraska and a B.A. in English from Augustana College.

Teaching Experience

Dr. Hindhede has been a professor of English at Central Arizona College (CAC) since 2009. She has taught a variety of literature and composition courses, including Children’s Literature, World Literature, and Technical Writing. She pioneered the English co-requisite model and teaches across multiple modalities.

Administration/Leadership

Currently serving as Interim Academic Dean for Arts & Sciences at CAC, Dr. Hindhede oversees eight academic divisions, ensuring accountability and strategic planning. Previously, she chaired the Literary Arts & Languages and Communication Divisions, managing faculty, budgets, and district-wide scheduling.

Research & Publications

Dr. Hindhede’s research interests focus on ecojustice pedagogy, social justice in children’s literature, and sustainability education. Her 2024 articles include Integrating EcoJustice Pedagogy with Social Justice Pedagogy in Children’s Literature Courses and We All Need to be Water Protectors: Diversity, the Environment, and Social and Environmental Justice Picturebook Themes and Portrayals.

Dr. Hindhede has been recognized with several awards, including the Sustainability Grant and the Spiro Coaching Institute Award in June 2024. Additionally, she received a working sabbatical from CAC in 2022–2023 and the Student Services Award for Collaboration in Fall 2022.
