Prof. Martin Deahl | Medicine | Best Researcher Award

Prof. Martin Deahl has been recognized throughout his distinguished career with numerous prestigious honours and awards that reflect his excellence in research, clinical practice, teaching, and public service. As an undergraduate at St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical College, he received the Senior Scholarship in Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry, the Herbert Patterson Prize in Biochemistry, the Slot Prize in Biochemistry, the Hungarian Prize in General Practice, the Jackson-Burrows Prize in Orthopaedics, the Joy and David Long Prize in Medicine, the Wheelwrights Prize in Paediatrics, and a Distinction in Medicine in his final MB.BS, all between 1980 and 1983. His postgraduate recognition includes the Denis Hill Prize in Psychiatry (1988) awarded for research excellence by the Institute of Psychiatry, University of London. Other significant accolades include an M.R.C. Travel Scholarship (1982), a commendation from the Chief Constable of British Transport Police for extraordinary public service during the King’s Cross fire (1988), Gulf War and Iraq campaign medals, the Liberation of Kuwait Medal, Freedom of the City of London, the Citizens Charter Award from the Department of Health for pioneering psychiatric service development, and repeated recognition as Best Teacher of Medicine (1994–2000). He has also received the Territorial Decoration, the Queen’s Commendation for Valuable Service (2005), Bronze and Silver UK National Clinical Excellence Awards (2002, 2007, renewed 2012), and, most notably, the Royal College of Psychiatrists President’s Medal in 2012 for outstanding services to psychiatry.
